An Improbable Ironman 10/02/2012

Ok, I am finally ready to share with you my most improbable, impossible, and perhaps craziest dream of all. I have set a goal to compete in the Louisville Ironman Triathlon in 2015. (Yea, I know how crazy that sounds for an old fat boy like me)

Now for those of you who are not familiar with triathlons, a triathlon consists of three segments, a swim, followed by a bike portion, ending in a run. For a little background information, there are several different classifications of triathlons. First there is the Sprint Distance, which consists of  ¼ –  ½  mile swim, 12 miles of cycling, followed by a  5k (3.1 mi) run.

The next level is called an Olympic Distance which consists of a one mile swim, 25 mile bike portion and a 10k (6.2 mile) run

The Half Ironman is a swim distance of 1.2 miles with a 56 mile bike ride, ending in a ½ marathon of 13.1 miles. These are also referred to as Ironman 70.3 which alludes to the total mileage.

And finally, the Ironman which is a 2.4 mile swim with a 112 mile ride followed with a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

As I begin this journey, I have broken it down into several smaller goals.

The first goal and perhaps the most important is:

  1. Don’t get hurt and don’t get sick. I know from past experience what can happen when I overdo it on a diet and exercise program. So far I have lost just over 20lbs, and with at least another 70lbs left to go to be at my Ironman goal, I need to remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint.
  2. Compete in the Oktoberfest 5k in Seymour, IN on October 6th. I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday than to accomplish this important beginning goal. (And for those who tend to worry about me, yes I have been training and am very confident in my ability to complete a 5K, the only question is… how long will it take? 🙂
  3. Next year, 2013, I plan to compete in at least two Sprint Distance Triathlons, with the possibility of an Olympic Distance thrown in, depending on how the training goes this fall, winter and spring. The ultimate goal for 2013 is to compete in my first Half Marathon. I am shooting for the Indianapolis Half Marathon at the end of October next year.
  4. In 2014 I am hoping to expand my endurance and compete in my first Half Ironman. I am planning (hoping) to do the Louisville Half Ironman in August of 2014, so that I can become comfortable with the course for the next year. The ultimate goal for 2014 is to compete in my first marathon. Once again, I plan to go to Indianapolis for the Indianapolis Marathon in October 2014. (That sounds almost impossible right now)
  5. 2015 will be the year for the Ironman.

So, that is my goal as crazy as it may sound right now. I will share a little bit more with you next time about my past triathlon experiences (not necessarily happy endings) and about how I came to love this sport. One thing for sure, the next few years shouldn’t be boring!
